Book Review: NARRATOR by Landon Beach

Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Shawn Frost flees New York City to escape his demons, and reinvent himself as an audiobook narrator. As he rises through the ranks in his new career, Shawn narrates bestseller after bestseller and becomes a household name within the field. But his worst nightmares become reality when Shawn is kidnapped by two obsessed fans who are intent on making him perform their novel . . . or so it seems.

NARRATOR by Landon Beach

It is easy, at first to compare Landon Beach's book, NARRATOR to Stephen King's MISERY. But instead of a successful author as the kidnapped protagonist, Beach shakes up that familiar plotline with a successful audiobook narrator protagonist. But the similarities vanish with the first quarter of the book. Where King's book is focused entirely on the captivity, pathos of the captor, and the escape, NARRATOR weaves a dark, twisted tale of not only the captivity, but also the aftermath. And, although the reader may think the story ends once the protagonist escapes, in this book, it is only the beginning.

Beach presents a compelling narrative from the point of view of his protagonist, which paints a vivid picture of the emotional impact on his character through captivity, recovery, and the investigation that ultimately leads to the truth. Character development in NARRATOR goes deep, and the protagonist's self-deprecating humor and primal instinct to survive make it easy to cheer him on from the first page.

NARRATOR draws the reader into the world of audiobook narration, providing a sometimes irreverent glimpse of the life of narrators, authors, publishers, producers, and critics. The plot of this psychological thriller is a rollercoaster of twists, and just when it seems the story is ending, it swerves in a completely different direction that makes the reader question every on the previous pages.

Additionally, NARRATOR is a book best consumed through the audiobook. Scott Brick delivers an outstanding performance as the protagonist, Shawn Frost. Brick lives up to his reputation and brings this novel to life.

NARRATOR is a first-class thriller that proves that Landon Beach is one of this generation's great authors. It is a book not to miss.
